Silver Glades is
fortunate to have an abundance of wildlife and every
effort is made to develop habitat and food supplies
to encourage as wide a range of wildlife as
possible. The main emphasis in the gardens is to
promote a natural environment which provides for
wildlife needs, with some additional feeding and
nesting provided. The wildlife that visits the
garden has to survive in its natural surroundings,
so no attempt is made to tame the creatures or get
them to visit at particular times of day. However,
guests usually get the opportunity to see a great
deal of wildlife, both in the gardens and the
surrounding area. |

There is a library of
wildlife books in the Summer House to help with the
identification of some of the rarer species. Most
creatures are shy and tend to avoid busy times in
the garden by arriving early or waiting until the
middle of the day when the majority of guests have
gone out, so viewing can take a little extra effort
or the odd early morning. Although it would be
unusual not to see a red squirrel during a week at
Silver Glades, no guarantee can be given. This also
applies to other species. However, if you are
lucky, some of the regular visitors to the garden
are: |
|
|
|
|
- Red Squirrels
- Pheasants
- Green and Spotted
Woodpeckers
- Birds of Prey, -
Sparrow Hawks, Kestrels, Buzzards, Barn Owl
- Wide range of other
birds, including Blue Tits and Finches
- Bats
- Foxes
- Stoats
- Butterflies and Moths
(many species)
- Numerous insects,
including glow worms

To encourage birds and
squirrels to areas where they can be viewed more easily,
there are two feeding stations in the garden. Guests
often like to bring a supply of food with them to put
outside their caravans. The living hide and summer
house provide very good viewing locations for guests
wanting to see what they can spot, although sitting
quietly anywhere in the garden usually brings results.
The occupants of the blue tit terrace at the side of
Reception are normally easy to see. This is probably
the widest bird box on the island! It has 13 homes and
was specially made to re-house the existing occupants
when their chosen home in the side wall of the Reception
had to be repaired. |
