Green
Action
Silver Glades Caravan Park aims to
provide quiet and tranquil holiday accommodation and believes that an
environmentally aware approach can bring direct benefits.
The effort that has
been devoted to promoting good environmental practices has been recognised by
the award of Gold standard under the Green Island project, which promotes
greener holidays.
|
Silver Glades was given the award for
Camping and Holiday Park of the Year by Green Island for 2006 and 2007/8.
Silver
Glades is committed to improving environmental performance by addressing the
following objectives:
- Pollution
prevention
- Energy
and water saving
- Waste
reduction and
recycling
- Environmentally-friendly purchasing
- Sustainable
transport
- Enhancing
bio-diversity
- Encouraging
wildlife
|
In terms
of practical matters, this means that guests will find environmentally-friendly
products, recycling facilities and energy-saving equipment in use on the site.
The electricity used at Silver Glades is provided by a small company called Good
Energy who only produce electricity from sustainable sources.
Guests
at Silver Glades are encouraged to help address environmental issues during
their stay and information on wildlife is available to further promote
understanding.
Silver
Glades supports the Gift to Nature scheme which promotes environmental projects
on the Isle of Wight. Guests have the opportunity to contribute a donation for
Gift to Nature, if they wish to do so.
Silver Glades use
environmentally friendly practices and provide facilities for guests. The
extent to which guests get involved in the green action is down to them. If you
would like to get more involved during a stay at Silver Glades here are a few
simple suggestions which would help:
- Minimise your use of
electricity, gas and water – Remember to turn off the TV, lights and other
equipment when not needed. Don’t leave taps running unnecessarily. Make use
of the washing lines rather than the tumble dryer.
- Use our recycling
facilities – you will
find recycling bins for paper, glass, card, polythene, aluminium and metal.
There is also a kitchen caddy at each caravan for compostable
waste.
- Use environmentally
friendly cleaning and laundry products – You will find some basic products in your
caravan and the laundry. If you wish to use your own please try to obtain
environmentally friendly
ones.
- Help feed the
wildlife – The local
wildlife will remove almost anything edible. Any scraps or surplus food can be
left at the feeding station in the woods. Birds and squirrels use the high
level table and badgers, foxes and rabbits use the lower table.
- Get your children
involved – Recycling and learning about wildlife can be fun for
children. You will find lots of information and Wildlife Fun Packs in
Reception.
- Try local
produce – Why not try
some Isle of Wight food products or crafts? You will find many outlets for Isle
of Wight products, including farmers’ markets. Many local residents also sell
home-produced goods.
- Have a car free
day
– Try exploring the local area on foot or by using public transport. You
will find some guides to local walks in Reception.
